Gage has known that he would need a transplant for a very long time. We used to mention it in passing but started weaving it into everyday conversations like "Gage, what do you want for lunch and did you know that you will be getting a new kidney some day!?"
So yesterday I told Gage that I wouldn’t be able to give him a kidney because of my kidney stones. I said "do you remember when Mommy had kidney stones?"
"Uh-huh. Who’s kidney will I get?"
"That is a great question. We don’t exactly know who will be giving a kidney for you yet. We are trying to find the perfect kidney and all the doctors are helping us!"
"I only want a kidney from someone I know."
"Why is that?"
"Because I need to know Mommy. DUH!"

If he gets it from someone he does not know you can make up stories, like it’s from a prince or a pirate or a former eagle scout. Wish we could offer but have to be selfish and save our kidneys for when our own son needs his transplant. Hope they get one of those swapping databases going good in the near future. Stay strong.
Thanks to you, I have decided to become an organ donor. I think that covers me in death, but can you tell me how I would qualify to give up say a kidney while I’m still alive? I don’t really know much about this. Your story is just so inspiring. I really do admire how strong you are for your children and I am praying that Gage finds a match real soon.
How would one go about getting tested to see if they were a match for someone else?
